Foundation Awards New Grant to Earth & Spirit Center

Earth Spirit CenterAt the first-quarter meeting of the Louisville Water Foundation, the board of directors approved a $10,000 grant to help the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center build a dock on Beargrass Creek.

The Center is committed to providing environmental and educational resources to help people learn to better navigate daily struggles through mindfulness, compassion, and deepening their connection to the natural world. The new dock will engage participants in nature-based summer camps by facilitating instruction focused on water conservation, erosion, pollution, and the water cycle.

“This engaging and immersive program will help our participants understand the importance of clean water, thriving watersheds, and healthy waterways,” said CEO Kyle Kramer.

He pointed out that “the south fork of Beargrass Creek runs throughout much of Louisville and empties into the Ohio River. Its health is key to the entire Metro Louisville watershed.”

Funding from the Louisville Water Foundation will directly support construction of the dock on the Center’s property. The grant also will help the organization build steps to the dock from established trails, and it will help with the purchase of educational supplies, including water testing kits.

This is the second grant the Foundation has awarded the organization. The previous one, in 2022, helped the Center develop educational water features. (One is shown in the photo above.) The Center uses these features to teach children “how water shapes the land and our dependence on it,” Kramer said.
